Org calls for an overhaul to closed primary elections

Should New York City allow more than 1 million independent voters to cast ballots in primary elections?

Mayor Zohran Mamdani doesn’t think so, saying he is “quite content” with the current way primaries are held in the five boroughs.

But open-primary supporters, including my next guest, call the existing system outdated, arguing it excludes a huge chunk of the electorate from determining the city’s political leaders.

Jeremy Gruber, the senior vice president at a national advocacy organization called Open Primaries, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to discuss more.

The group is calling on the mayor to meet and hear directly from independent voters on the topic.
