On my way home late Sunday morning I was surprised to see a police car blocking the entrance to Montague Street from Hicks. When I reached the corner I saw why. A huge tractor-trailer rig had gotten stuck trying to turn from Montague onto Pierrepont Place. Approaching home I took the photo above. This is something I’d seen many times before, but this time it seemed more problematic than usual, probably because the rig had an unusually long trailer. As told by Mary Frost in the Eagle, it took one and one half hours “and counting” to dislodge it, quoting Timmy Daniels, whose dramatic photos accompany her story. The story notes that “according to the New York City Department of Transportation 53-foot semi-trailers are not allowed to make pick ups or deliveries in any borough of New York City.” It also quotes Lara Birnback, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Heights Association, as noting that trucks with oversize trailers are “totally illegal” on our streets and that, “[t]he problem is, there’s no enforcement.”
