PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS, Brooklyn (PIX11) — Tenants living in an apartment building at 75 Lenox Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens say years of neglected repairs have left them living in deplorable conditions.
Rodents, leaking ceilings, mold, and mushrooms growing from a bathroom ceiling are among the conditions tenants tell PIX11 News they’ve been forced to live with.

“Last year our ceiling was this close to collapsing, and finally after almost a year, they got to it right before it did, and we already have issues right now with it again, and it’s been less than a year,” said Carolyne Terc, a tenant in the building.
HPD records show the building has more than 300 open violations, ranging from mice infestations to water leaks. Aisha Battice, who cares for her mother, said she’s had to pay out of her own pocket for repairs in her apartment, which is a financial burden.
“Taking care of a sick parent with one income and having to spend $800 just on a fridge,” she said. “The carpeting $350. Painting $500 out of pocket with one income. It’s not right.”
After what they describe as repeated ignored pleas for repairs, tenants have launched an online petition calling on their landlord, JK Management, to take action. They’re also prepared to begin a rent strike next month if conditions don’t improve.
“We deserve to live with running water, a functioning stove, a functioning fridge,” Terc said. “We’re not being annoying or a nuisance for asking for those things. You sign up to be a landlord; that comes with responsibility.”
PIX 11 News reached out to JK Management for comment regarding tenants’ concerns and is still waiting to hear back.
