New York State opens $4.7 million in grants to expand meat processing facilities

  • July 15, 2026

NEW YORK (WBNG) — More than $4.7 million is now available to help expand or create meat processing facilities across New York State, according to the state Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Markets and the Hudson Valley AgriBusiness Development Corporation (HVADC).

The funding is part of the second round of the Meat Processing Expansion Grant (MPEG) Program, designed to increase processing capacity and support producers of beef, pork and other meats.

State officials say this round builds on nearly $5 million awarded to 26 projects in 2023, while also expanding eligibility and what types of projects qualify.

Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said meat processors are a key link in the food supply chain and the state aims to help more businesses grow, modernize and meet consumer demand.

HVADC Deputy Director Mary Ann Johnson said demand for USDA-inspected processing has outpaced capacity at times, forcing farmers to search for available slots to get products to market.

With support from Gov. Kathy Hochul and the state legislature, the program was created in 2022 after pandemic-era supply chain disruptions highlighted a shortage of processing facilities.

Sen. Michelle Hinchey said the grants are intended to make it easier for producers to sell locally while strengthening the supply chain and reducing costs for consumers.

Grant funding can be used for capital projects, including equipment purchases, installation, fixtures and certain facility improvements.

Awards will range from $50,000 to $250,000. Applications are open now and will be accepted until 5 p.m. Sept. 23, 2026.

HVADC will also host virtual office hours at 12 p.m. on July 22 and Aug. 26 to answer questions about the application process.
