BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — Some commuters in the Bronx will have a faster ride heading to work soon!
The first busway in The Bronx will be installed along Tremont Avenue, Mayor Mamdani announced Wednesday.

The busy corridor, served by the Bx36 bus, can travel as slowly as five miles per hour and used by 39,000 riders daily.
“New Yorkers should not lose hours of their lives sitting in traffic on a bus,” said Mamdani. “…We’re building streets that move people instead of sticking them in gridlock.”
Tremont Avenue is also one of the borough’s most dangerous streets, according to city officials. Over 600 people were injured in the crashes along the busy corridor.
The busway would improve safety while speeding bus service.
Busways already installed in other parts of the city have increased bus speeds by as much as 60% while reducing injuries by up to 40%, according to city officials.
The busway will be half a mile long, with eastbound service stretching from Third Avenue to Southern Boulevard. The westbound busway will stretch from Southern Boulevard to Belmont Avenue.
There will also be an offset shared bus-and-bike lane eastbound between Webster Avenue and Third Avenue.
Safety improvements will also be conducted at eight intersections in the area, including painted sidewalk extensions that shorten crossing distances for pedestrians.
Once installed, the busway will be operated seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Traffic in the corridor will be limited to buses, trucks with six or more vehicles, emergency vehicles, and Access-a-Ride Vehicles.
Other vehicles may enter for local access, but must exit at the next available right turn.
The NYPD, along with automated cameras, will be enforcing the busway. Violators may face fines ranging from $50 to $250.
