Firefighters respond Thursday after a wall collapsed during demolition work at 5005 Fifth Ave. in Sunset Park.

A wall being demolished at a Brooklyn construction site collapsed Thursday afternoon, damaging a neighboring Salvation Army community center that provides food, meals and other social services to the Sunset Park neighborhood, officials said.
The collapse occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. at 5005 Fifth Ave. Firefighters responded to reports of a partial building collapse and found damage to the upper corner of the adjacent building at 520 50th St., home to The Salvation Army Brooklyn Sunset Park Corps Community Center.
According to a New York City Department of Buildings spokesperson, inspectors were called to the site for a structural stability inspection after a section of brick and concrete wall collapsed into the demolition area of an active construction site operating under a DOB permit. The demolition was taking place on an existing building at the site. The investigation remains ongoing.

The two-story commercial building at 520 50th St., constructed in 1931, houses the Salvation Army’s Sunset Park Corps Community Center, which operates a food pantry, provides weekday hot lunches, offers an after-school program and delivers other social services to residents, according to its website.
No injuries were reported, according to the Department of Buildings spokesperson. The community center could not immediatetly be reached.
