At its core, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s moratorium on hyperscale data centers is an effort to manage what is a scarce public resource. She said in an interview with Capital Tonight on Thursday that in weighing the pros and cons of data centers against other large load users like Micron, data centers come up short. Also, the New York State Unified Court System issued a memo at the beginning of July stating: “Effective July 20, 2026, ‘smart glasses’ – i.e., eyewear or headwear containing a camera, microphone, computer or other technology that permit the user to record video or audio – either prescription or non-prescription, are prohibited inside any Unified Court System facility.”
