CITYWIDE — THE BROOKLYN WEST All-Stars recently lost a heartbreaking game to Greenwich Village Little League at only 8-7, ending their hopes of advancing to the New York Sectionals and continuing their quest for a Little League World Series berth. The contest took place July 9 at Riverside Park in Manhattan.
Brooklyn West had the tying run at the plate in the final inning, but the would-be tying run was thrown out at home, ending the team’s comeback bid. “We had a valiant comeback in the last inning, going into it down 8-3, but in the end, our early mistakes came back to haunt us,” head coach Jesus Estaba told the Brooklyn Eagle.
“Unfortunately we beat ourselves and that cost us a handful of runs,” Estaba said. “Although we came up short, we are still focused on winning the district next season and hopefully making it to Williamsport.”
No Kings County team has won the Little League World Series championship. The closest a Brooklyn team has come to the Little League World Series was the Brooklyn West All-Stars run this season.
The district win would have sent Brooklyn West to the New York Sectional Tournament to play against three other districts in the league. The section champion advances to the New York State tournament, featuring section champions from around New York. The New York State champion advances to the Metro Region, where it faces champions from other nearby states/jurisdictions in the region, such as New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island, depending on the division and current alignment. Finally, the Metro Region champion earns a berth in the Little League World Series.
