A 43-story skyscraper was evacuated Friday, sending more than 200 people out into the streets, after a fire broke out at a midtown Manhattan restaurant, authorities said.
Fire officials say they were called to the scene at the 520 Madison Avenue high-rise around 7 a.m. for a reported fire in a duct. The building was evacuated.
Video posted to the Citizen app shows smoke billowing from the top of the skyscraper.
Five minor injuries to civilians were reported.
Investigators said at a media briefing that they learned the original fire started in a restaurant on East 54th Street. The address comes back to Papillon, a Parisian-inspired bistro and bar.
The bar was decked out in World Cup gear ahead of Saturday’s third-place match between France and England.
A cause of the fire is under investigation.
