ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Brooklyn man is accused of running a fraudulent return scheme at Walmart stores across New York state after deputies said they found approximately $29,000 worth of real and suspected fraudulent computer processors in his vehicle.
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37-year-old Huang Dong on Friday after investigators said he returned to the Walmart on State Route 19 in the town of Warsaw and became involved in another fraudulent return transaction.
Deputies said they also recovered more than $1,000 in cash believed to be proceeds from the returns.
The investigation began July 11, when Walmart asset protection employees reported that a man had allegedly tried to return a high-value computer processor for a refund using fraudulent means.
Investigators identified Dong as the suspected individual and determined he had allegedly completed similar transactions at multiple Walmart locations across the state, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies took Dong into custody without incident in the store’s parking lot.
Dong was charged with first-degree scheme to defraud, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny and criminal simulation.
He was processed and released and is scheduled to appear in Warsaw Town Court at a later date.
