BRONX, NY — Tommy Edman found ways to help the Dodgers in both games of Sunday’s doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. He reached base three times and scored three runs in the opener, then came off the bench to hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning of the nightcap. Edman said his steady work before games has helped him stay sharp in several roles.
“It’s preparation and having a consistent routine,” Edman said. “I think I’ve done a really good job of getting bad habits out of the way before they creep into my swing a little bit more. I feel like I have a much better knowledge of what my swing needs to look like right now, and I’ve been able to ride it out since I’ve been back.”
Edman has produced while batting in different spots in the order and while coming off the bench. He batted ninth in the first game and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. In the second game, he entered as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and drove Fernando Cruz’s pitch over the right-center-field wall to tie the score at 1-1.
His work also stood out in the field. In the eighth inning of the nightcap, Edman kept his foot on second base while reaching for José Caballero’s ground ball and recorded a force out on Austin Wells.
“I was just trying to get an out, and the easiest out was at second,” Edman said. “I thought maybe if it took a good bounce, I was going to be able to catch it without falling down and then potentially throw him out at first as well. It just kept hopping toward the shortstop side, and I wasn’t able to get into a good position to make a throw to first.”
The Dodgers lost the second game 2-1 after Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the bottom of the eighth, but they still left New York with a series win. Sunday also brought the club’s first doubleheader of the season, making for a long stay at Yankee Stadium.
“It’s 10:30, and I got here at 9:00 today,” Edman said. “I watched the whole World Cup game. It was a long day at the field. This was our first doubleheader of the year, I’m pretty sure, so it was good to get that one out of the way and good to come out of here with the series win.”
