On July 18, 2026, the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision notified the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Ellenville of the death of an incarcerated individual.
Preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 1:40AM, a fire occurred in a cell at Eastern Correctional Facility. Correctional facility staff extinguished the fire and found the victim, Marcos Alcaraz, age 35, within the cell. Alcaraz was transported to Ellenville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The incident is being investigated by the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations, the Ulster County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The NYS Attorney General’s Office was also notified and responded to the scene.
