New York City’s elite specialized public high schools have faced backlash for years over the small number of admissions offers made to the city’s relatively large number of Black and Latino students.
Black students make up almost 20% of the city’s public school attendees, and Latino students make up 42%. However, combined, they made up just 10% of offers made by specialized high schools.
Queens Borough President Donovan Richards joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Monday to discuss more.
Richards has been a vocal critic of the admissions process to these schools and the test that’s required for applicants to be considered.
“Listen, we are being locked out,” he said.
“The statistics even say something is wrong with this and we need to fix it,” Richards added.
