The project will add new offset bus lanes from Sedgwick Avenue and Boston Road in an effort to make the commute faster and more reliable for 130,000 daily bus riders, the news release said
According to the news release, in that section of the Bronx, 62% of households do not have access to a private vehicle and 71% of residents rely on public transit or other ways of transportation to get around.
The project will add new offset bus lanes from Sedgwick Avenue and Boston Road in an effort to make the commute faster and more reliable for 130,000 daily bus riders, the news release said.
“We’re not only promising fast buses, we’re delivering them,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote in a statement. “This year, Fordham Road riders won’t have to watch their time disappear in traffic while cars block bus lanes that were meant for people.”
According to the news release, in that section of the Bronx, 62% of households do not have access to a private vehicle and 71% of residents rely on public transit or other ways of transportation to get around.
“This redesign will give bus riders much-needed relief with faster and more reliable service while managing vehicle traffic in the area. Where we’ve installed similar designs, we’ve seen bus speeds increase as much as 28%, and we’ll continue monitoring the corridor for further improvements as needed,” Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn wrote in a statement.
The redesign would update Fordham Road’s curbside lanes to offset lanes to better split buses from traffic, and will also provide parking and loading spaces for local businesses, according to the DOT.
