A powerful vehicle explosion in The Bronx late Wednesday night injured at least five firefighters and ignited a massive fire that damaged nearby buildings.

A powerful explosion ripped through a section of The Bronx, New York State, late Wednesday night after a vehicle erupted in flames, injuring multiple firefighters and sending residents scrambling for safety.
Multiple media reports quoted officials as saying that the blast occurred near 955 Westchester Avenue, where a parked vehicle suddenly exploded at nearly 10.45 pm.
The explosion triggered a fierce fire that quickly spread, engulfing the vehicle and nearby structures in flames.
The New York City Fire Department was quoted as saying that at least five firefighters were hospitalised with burn injuries sustained while battling the blaze.
Crews worked through thick smoke and intense heat to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and disbelief.
“The whole block shook, it felt like a movie scene, except it was real life,” a local resident, who watched as flames shot high into the sky, was quoted as saying.
Emergency personnel cordoned off the area as investigators began probing the cause of the explosion, which remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, authorities urged residents to avoid the vicinity of Westchester Avenue as cleanup and safety assessments continue through the night.
In a separate incident, an explosion at a hydrogen and nitrogen product manufacturer in Mississippi on Wednesday caused an ammonia leak and forced nearby residents to evacuate.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves mentioned in a post on X that emergency officials from across the state were responding to the anhydrous ammonia leak at CF Industries’ plant north of Yazoo City.
No deaths or injuries were reported.
The Yazoo City facility includes an ammonia plant, four nitric acid plants, along with other plants.
It is able to store about 48,000 tons of ammonia, although the exact amount at the facility when the explosion took place was not immediately clear.
