BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Brooklyn FC Men are back at home this weekend, returning to Maimonides Park to play San Antonio FC for the first time in club history on Saturday, July 25 at 7 p.m. ET.
The match will stream on ESPN+.
Brooklyn (3-8-4, 13 points), which is in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, is coming off its second draw of the USL Championship season with Sporting JAX. Although the team fell behind by two goals in the first half, Brooklyn rallied with goals from two veterans, Tommy McNamara and JC Obregon. They were named to the USL Championship team of the week.
This will be San Antonio’s first East Coast trip this campaign. The Texas side (8-3-7, 25) is one of the top teams in the Western Conference, sitting in second place, three points behind Orange County SC (7-2-7, 28). San Antonio’s last result was a 2-1 home loss to the Las Vegas Lights.
San Antonio has an experienced squad that includes multiple players with more than 100 USL Championship appearances. This includes defenders Alex Crognale, Danny Barbir, and Mitchell Taintor, who has the third most minutes played in the league’s history. A player to keep an eye on is Mexican midfielder Jorge Hernandez. He is tied for the most assists (six) in the league while also scoring five goals. In four seasons with San Antonio, he is ninth in league history with 41 assists.
Brooklyn’s form has been helped by the return of several key players, such as defenders Ryan McLaughlin, So Nishikawa, and midfielder Taimu Okiyosh. They came back into the starting XI in the last few weeks after dealing with various injuries.
The goals have also been spread out more amongst the squad. Obregon has scored two weeks in a row, including a free kick that won goal of the round. McNamara, the team captain, also scored and assisted last week, both firsts in his Brooklyn career.
Forward Markus Anderson and midfielder CJ Olney Jr will be ones to watch as the club’s leading goal scorer and assist man, respectively. Brooklyn will also welcome the return of forward Stefan Stojanovic, who served a red-card suspension.
The defense is still looking to improve. Brooklyn is averaging 1.7 goals conceded per match, the third most in the league.
Brooklyn FC will hit the road to take on one of the top Eastern Conference teams, the Charleston Battery, on Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The team will return home to Maimonides Park to face Birmingham Legion on Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. ET.
