Two years ago, New York state, multiple research institutions and a couple of philanthropic foundations invested $565 million into a unique project to supercharge computing power to benefit academic research.
The consortium is called “Empire AI.” The research institutions using these machines include SUNY and CUNY, Cornell, RPI, the University of Rochester and others. They all have paid for access to Empire AI for its computing power, which is based at the University of Buffalo.
New York state is the first in the nation to establish computing power for the public good at this scale.
Kiran Keshav, the director of Empire AI, joined Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter to outline the consortium’s benefits to research institutions and taxpayers.
