PARK SLOPE — THE HISTORIC OLD STONE HOUSE on Third Street was awarded a $60,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant is part of a larger financial infusion into humanities projects across the U.S., with a total of $41.4 million distributed amongst 81 projects. Around $3.9 million was distributed amongst 11 projects in New York state.
The grants will support programs in coordination with ongoing national celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. NEH funding for these projects responds to the Jan. 29, 2025, Presidential executive order, “Celebrating America’s Birthday,” and is part of the agency’s larger “A More Perfect Union” initiative.
The Old Stone House received the grant for its project, “Old Stone House: Witness to War — The Battle of Brooklyn.” The funding will be used for the expansion and update of a permanent Battle of Brooklyn exhibition, including the development of accompanying online interactive materials. Kimberly Maier is the project director.
The Old Stone House’s website has announced this year’s Battle of Brooklyn commemoration for Sunday, Aug. 22. This strategic battle took place on Aug. 27, 1776.
