A Queens neighborhood is mourning the loss of an Army sergeant believed to be one of four American soldiers killed in an Iranian attack in Jordan.
Along 96th Street in Ozone Park on Wednesday, flags could be seen flown at half staff in honor of fallen Army Sergeant Angel Rampersad.
“We just put out a flag as a sign of respect and solidarity, that we’re all together and we feel you,” said Brenda Graham, who lives in the neighborhood.
Graham said the community learned of Sgt. Rampersad’s death Sunday. The Pentagon said she was killed in an Iranian attack on an American base in Jordan.
“The family is in shock right now. I don’t think any of this has become real for them yet” Carlos Garcia, a spokesperson for the family, said outside the fallen soldier’s home, where a flag was lowered to half staff.
Rampersad’s mother and wife had traveled to Dover Air Force base, where her body was returned along with three others killed in the war with Iran.
The White House said President Trump met with the families Wednesday.
“There’s no games. That’s their child. All you can do is throw out your heart,” President Trump said.
Rampersad played drums in her church choir and ran track, the family’s spokesperson said. She had enlisted in the Army about seven years ago, doing so only after fulfilling her mom’s wish to finish college first.
In a statement, Gov Hochul said Sgt. Rampersad lived a life of courage and selflessness. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said her courage and sacrifice will be remembered not just in Queens but across all five boroughs .”
