More than a dozen Upper East Side buildings have been added to the list of addresses that tested positive for the live bacteria causing the Legionnaires’ outbreak, the health department said in its latest update.

The addendum comes two days after health officials released a preliminary list of 33 buildings with cooling towers that yielded positive results for live Legionella.

They had said more addresses may be added, and still more addresses may be added as new test results are reported. That doesn’t mean any particular one of them is the source of the Legionella exposure in the current cluster, officials note.

That initial list release came as the city announced a fifth outbreak-related death. With another seven remaining hospitalized as of Wednesday night, according to the health department, more fatalities are possible.

Upper East Side Legionnaires’ Outbreak

Zip codes highlighted below have been identified as part of the Legionnaires’ disease community cluster on the Upper East Side. Red circles identify buildings that have tested positive for live Legionella bacteria.

Overall, 84 people in the impacted zones — ZIP codes 10028, 10128, and 10075 — had tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease. New daily case counts appeared to plunge after peaking on July 7. Of those 84, 59 needed hospitalization but have been discharged. Another 13 did not need to be hospitalized.

The cooling towers that tested positive for the live bacteria have been fully cleaned, the Health Department said. The department said it would continue to update the addresses on its website as appropriate.
