NEW IBERIA, La. (NEWS 15) — A new outdoor plaza opened in New Iberia’s Li’l Brooklyn neighborhood, marking a milestone in an ongoing community revitalization effort.
The ribbon was cut on Marie L. Kelly Plaza, a renovated pocket park that features a mini library, an open-air stage, and outdoor seating for several families.
The project was a collaboration between the Li’l Brooklyn Neighborhood Initiative, the city of New Iberia, and the state.
New Iberia Mayor Freddie DeCourt attended the grand opening on Rosier Street on Wednesday and reflected on the neighborhood’s transformation.
“These 30-something houses have been uplifted through a private organization and the neighbors themselves,” DeCourt said. “So, it is important to me and a great source of pride to watch a neighborhood come together, fix itself, to be participants in the park from the design, embracing this little park. So, all of that is just good government work. So, that doesn’t happen as much as we’d like it to, so it’s a good day.”
The plaza represents the latest step in a broader effort to revitalize the Li’l Brooklyn neighborhood through partnerships between residents, local government, and private organizations.
