7/23; 3:15 p.m.—A man at the New York State Office of Mental Health’s Secure Treatment and Rehabilitation Center-Oakview reportedly assaulted a staff member and barricaded himself inside a secure wing of the facility.
New York State Police said the situation began July 22 around 3 p.m. when a male resident assaulted a staff member with a jagged piece of plastic from a broken fluorescent light cover, causing a non-life-threatening leg injury that required treatment at a local urgent care.
After the assault, the resident locked himself in a secure area while still armed.
Facility staff and residents were evacuated safely.
NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Uniform Force, Crisis Negotiation Unit and Special Operations Response Team responded.
After several hours, SORT members took the resident into custody without further violence.
Once medically cleared, the resident was processed by State Police and taken to Oneida County Jail to await CAP Court arraignment.
He faces charges that include assault, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal tampering, criminal mischief and menacing.
State Police are not releasing the suspect’s name due to his mental health status.
The investigation is ongoing.

MARCY, N.Y. — An individual barricaded themself in a room at the Secure Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Marcy.
New York State Police said this happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Negotiators communicated with the person, and the entire floor was evacuated as a precaution.
Police confirmed there were no hostages involved.
