ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT)— Dinosaurs have officially returned to Albany!

The New York State Museum has opened “Expedition Dinosaur: Rise of the Mammals,” a brand-new interactive exhibit designed to transport visitors millions of years back in time while giving children a hands-on learning experience.
Located inside the museum’s new Kids Zone, the exhibit features towering animatronic dinosaurs, fossils, interactive displays, and activities that encourage children to explore the prehistoric world through play.
Museum officials say the goal was to create an experience that combines education with imagination.
“There was no question when we opened the Kids Zone to the public, we wanted to bring the dinosaurs,” said Jennifer Saunders, director of the New York State Museum.
Visitors can dig for fossils, create dinosaur artwork that comes to life through interactive technology, and learn how dinosaurs and early mammals lived millions of years ago. Museum leaders say the exhibit encourages curiosity by allowing children to touch, explore, and actively participate rather than simply observe.
“I think kids learn so well when they’re able to touch and explore the past,” Saunders said. “This exhibit really gives them the opportunity to make discoveries of their own while having fun.”
The exhibit also highlights the transition from the age of dinosaurs to the rise of mammals, giving families an opportunity to learn about Earth’s changing ecosystems through engaging displays and interactive experiences.
Museum officials hope the exhibit will become a destination for families throughout the Capital Region and beyond, especially as children look for educational activities during the summer months.
“Expedition Dinosaur: Rise of the Mammals” will remain on display at the New York State Museum through January.
