HURLEYVILLE- A heartfelt journey through family history, Brooklyn neighborhoods, and Catskills summers comes to the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC) on Thursday, Aug. 6, with the one-night-only presentation of Being Somebody: Growing Up in Brooklyn… A Father/Daughter Tale.
Performed by real-life father and daughter Dr. Howard Mase and Marla Mase, the production traces their family’s story from the 1940s through the 1990s. Blending storytelling, music, photographs, and letters discovered in a drawer, the performance explores childhood, family traditions, friendship, and the lasting connections between generations.
The show is filled with familiar touchstones for many audiences, including memories of Brooklyn neighborhoods, Catskills bungalow colonies, family gatherings, and treasured photographs that capture moments from the past. While rooted in one family’s experiences, the production invites audiences to reflect on their own family histories and the memories that have shaped their lives.
Following the performance, audience members are invited to remain for a talkback with Howard Mase, Marla Mase, and producer Elizabeth Browning, offering an opportunity to discuss the production, ask questions, and share personal stories inspired by the evening.
“This is more than a theatrical performance. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the people, places, and memories that make us who we are,” said Christina Antizzo, CEO of the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre.
