MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Firefighters in Manhattan quickly doused an apartment fire Monday evening.

Vivienne Leyva with the City of Manhattan said city fire crews were dispatched to reports of an apartment complex on fire at 6:45 p.m. on July 27 in the 400 block of Walters Drive. Crews arriving at the scene spotted smoke and flames coming from a second-floor attic space of a two-story apartment building containing eight units.

Leyva said nearly two-dozen firefighters responded to the situation, extinguishing the fire within 10 minutes after arriving at the scene. Fire crews continued to work into the night to ensure the fire was fully out.

No people or animals were hurt as a result of the fire, according to the City of Manhattan. All residents of the apartment were able to exit the building safely prior to the arrival of fire crews. The American Red Cross is assisting four people and one dog who were displaced due to the fire.

The Manhattan Fire Department estimates the total losses associated with this fire to be $40,000 in contents loss and $100,000 in structural damages. Leyva said the fire started on the balcony of a second-story apartment. She also said foul play is not suspected to have played a part in the fire.

“The heat index was 112 at the time of the alarm, and I am proud of the great work crews did to knock down the fire quickly despite the extreme heat,” said Assistant Chief of Operations Sam Dameron. “Thankfully, no one was injured.”

MFD investigators continue to look into what caused the fire.
