The city’s Jewish community is sounding the alarm about a rise in antisemitism after a Jewish man and an Asian man were stabbed on the Upper West Side last week.
That attack, which is being investigated as a hate crime, has also intensified the growing tension between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city’s Jewish leaders over his criticism of the Israeli government.
Over the weekend, Mamdani reiterated his vow to combat antisemitism. While Jewish New Yorkers make up 10% of the city’s population, NYPD crime stats show that more than half of all reported hate crimes in the city since January were anti-Jewish.
Mark Treyger, the CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, sits down with NY1’s Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” to discuss the attacks. Treyger is also a former City Council member and former senior Department of Education official.
