A Bronx woman who was stabbed 22 times says she is stuck in a living nightmare as the legal process surrounding her case stretches on without end, while the man allegedly responsible for her attack remains on the street.

Kaitlynn Berman entered Bronx Supreme Court on Wednesday with hope that the constant court hearings would finally come to an end and the man responsible for unleashing a bloody attack as her 3-year-old daughter slept in the next room last year would finally be put behind bars. Instead, she encountered yet another delay.

Due to an ongoing public defenders’ strike, her attorney did not appear, and the case was adjourned to September, yet again allowing her attacker to go free.

“It gets more upsetting every court date because it’s annoying how it keeps getting postponed or adjourned, and he’s just walking out every court date,” Berman told amNewYork. “He’s not being supervised. He’s just, you know, outside walking the streets. I can bump into him any time of the day.”

Berman said the incident unfolded inside her apartment on March 22, 2025, when the suspect, Christopher Joseph, allegedly told her that he was “obsessed” with her. The pair were hanging out together when she says he launched the horrendous attack.

“He asked me to get him something to drink. And when I turned my back to grab him something to drink, with no words being said or anything, he just stabbed me over and over,” Berman recalled.

Just 22 years old at the time, the young mother spent 48 days in the hospital recovering from her injuries.

Meanwhile, Joseph was arrested and charged with attempted murder and a slew of other charges. However, he was released without bail on Dec. 10 of last year.

According to Berman, the prosecutor failed to submit the appropriate paperwork within the 90-day period, which ultimately led to his release.

Joseph attended the court hearing with his mother Wednesday but yet again was granted his freedom.

Civil rights leader Bishop Boyde Singletary, who has been attending the proceedings alongside Berman, said he is outraged over yet another delay.

“It’s been a toll on her because the left side of her body was damaged. She has nerve damage. She can slightly see [out of] her left eye, and she also has a lot of pain in her left hand, which she will never be the same again physically, psychologically, and emotionally. This man, this monster, is still here, and he’s still able to move around freely with no problem,” Boyde railed. “She’s petrified.”

Both Singletary and Berman say that Joseph has allegedly continued to stalk her over social media, liking her photos, which they say is a violation of the restraining order.

“This is serious, and I just feel that we need to take further action,” Pastor Cheryl Singletary said. “This is absolutely unacceptable. I was very upset today.”

The proceeding was set to determine if Joseph would accept a plea deal of 10 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release; or go to trial, which will now take place Sept. 16. 

“I’m hoping for at least 13 to 15 years. I think the 10 years offer is way too low,” Berman said.
