Assemblymember Steven Raga joined neighbors, civic leaders, and community organizations on Tuesday, July 7, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at Maspeth Memorial Park commemorating the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. The program began with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Alexander and Christopher Kruger. Local residents and community leaders then took turns reading sections of the Declaration of Independence before attendees gathered for a community photo.
“For 250 years, our country has lived through struggle, turbulence, progress, and hope, from the American Revolution to the challenges we face today,” said Assemblymember Steven Raga. “America has always been a country worth fighting for and a promise we must continue working to make real every day. By coming together to read the Declaration of Independence, we honor the people who fought to create this nation while reflecting on the work still ahead to fulfill its promise of liberty, equality, and justice for all.”
The annual reading has been a tradition in Assembly District 30 since 2018, beginning under the office of former Assemblymember Brian Barnwell. Assemblymember Raga’s office was proud to carry the tradition forward during its final year in office and provide residents with an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s founding principles and their continued meaning today. The event was made possible through partnerships with Maspeth Federal Savings, Maspeth Town Hall, Woodside on the Move, Brothers Helping Brothers, and the Maspeth Chamber of Commerce. Assemblymember Raga thanked the readers, performers, sponsors, community partners, and residents who helped continue this longstanding Assembly District 30 tradition.
