STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A new analysis of crime data has identified the safest cities in New York, with a small Westchester County community topping the list for 2026.
SafeWise’s annual rankings, based on the latest violent and property crime reports submitted through the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System, placed Rye at No. 1 among more than 60 cities analyzed statewide. Bedford, which held the top spot the previous two years, finished second, followed by Scarsdale, East Fishkill and Hyde Park.
Submissions from over 63 cities statewide were recorded and tallied as part of the analysis.
According to the data, Rye, with a population of 16,094, has a violent crime rate of 0.1% and a property crime rate of 2.5%.
Tailing close behind is the city of Bedford, which was ranked the safest for two consecutive years prior. The city’s violent crime rate is 0.2% and its property crime rate clocks in at 2.5%.
With violent crime at 0.1% and property crime at 3.6%, Scarsdale ranks third on the list.
Ranking forth and fifth are East Fishkill and Hyde Park, respectively. Violent crime is 0.2% and property crime is at 4.3% for the former. For the latter, violent crime is at 0.5% and property crime is 4.1%.
The most recent State of Safety report, conducted by SafeWise, highlighted growing concerns about crime among New York residents, with cybercrime topping the list. According to the data, 75% of New Yorkers said they are concerned about cybercrime, followed by 70% who expressed concern about gun violence. Violent crime (68%), package theft (61%) and property crime (58%) also ranked among residents’ top worries. In each category, New Yorkers reported higher levels of concern than the national average, suggesting that crime and public safety issues remain a significant source of anxiety across the state.
