TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Residents near the corner of Manhattan Boulevard and Elm Street in North Toledo say a pile of trash including overflowing bins, a mattress and a broken toilet has been growing at the end of their street for three months, and their attempts to get it removed have not produced results.
Neighbor Kathy McCollum said the situation has become a persistent problem for people living on the block.
“We don’t want to look at that, everyday three months,” McCollum said. “Rats, everything coming out over there… then other people is dumping stuff over there.”
The trash sits next to a white house on the corner of Manhattan and Elm Street. Residents said the trash was previously spread across the yard of the property and that the owner of a nearby carryout had owned the home.
A clerk inside the carryout said he gathered much of the trash and moved it to the side of the road in response to complaints, and that the owner sold the property some time ago.
According to real estate records on the Lucas County Auditor’s website, Belger Estate LLC, based out of New Jersey, owns the property. Attempts Thursday evening to contact the owners were unsuccessful. A phone number that appears to belong to the property owner was not in service.
Republic Services, the area’s trash pickup provider, said it has documented recurring instances of improperly disposed waste at 361 Manhattan Blvd. since May 19.
“Waste placed outside designated collection areas or in an unsafe manner may create safety hazards and cannot be picked up through routine collection,” the company said in a statement.
Republic Services said it will work with the City of Toledo on outreach and education efforts to help prevent future occurrences in the area. The company said crews will arrive the following morning to remove any material that can be safely collected.
Residents said they have reached out to Engage Toledo and Republic Services to address the issue but have not gotten a response. They said regardless of the circumstances surrounding the property and its ownership, they want the trash removed.
“Move it, get it off the street,” McCollum said. “Come get it soon as possible. We don’t have to suffer and look at that.”
McCollum added: “That is unacceptable.”
