New York state Assemblyman Brian Maher has been called to active duty as part of the Navy Reserve and will be deployed overseas in a designated combat area for nine months, the Republican lawmaker announced Thursday.
Maher said his district office will remain fully staffed and operational to continue assisting residents. His chief of staff and director of operations will lead the office during his absence.
“As I temporarily fulfill my duties in a different capacity, I want to reassure residents that our commitment to serving them remains steadfast,” Maher said in a statement. “My team will continue to advocate for your needs with the same passion and diligence that define our office, and I will continue to introduce and advocate for legislation that is important to our communities.”
Maher represents the 101st state Assembly District, which consists of parts of Delaware, Orange, Otsego and Ulster counties, and includes the towns of Goshen, Walden and Ellenville. Maher was first elected to the state’s lower chamber in 2022.
“There is no more admirable call to answer than the one to serve your nation. I deeply admire Assemblyman Maher for his unwavering commitment to his country and wish him a safe deployment abroad,” Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay said in a statement. “I am confident that his staff will continue to serve and meet the needs of the constituents of the 101st district during his absence.”
Maher enlisted in the Navy Reserve in July 2018.
