PITCAIRN, N.Y. — A Syracuse man was killed in a crash in the North Country, the New York State Police said.
The state police identified the deceased as Chukwudi O. Okereke, 22. He was the driver of the vehicle.
On July 30, around 7:53 p.m., troopers responded to State Route 3 in the Town of Pitcairn for a report of a serious crash.
The state police said a preliminary investigation determined that a white 2022 Isuzu box truck was traveling westbound on State Route 3 when Okereke lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason.
Okereke’s vehicle entered the southern shoulder, left the roadway and struck a fence before continuing and coming to a rest after striking a tree.
Local fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene and provided medical assistance. An off-duty physician who was among the first to arrive at the scene also provided medical care to those involved in the collision.
Okereke was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, a 20-year-old man from Cicero, N.Y., was taken to Gouverneur Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
