STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A child was taken to the hospital following a vehicle collision involving an electric scooter in Greenridge late Thursday afternoon, police said.

At approximately 4:45 p.m., first responders received a 911 call for a crash at the intersection of Benson Street and Kenilworth Avenue, according to a spokesperson for the NYPD.

According to the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, a 12-year-old boy was operating a stand-up electric scooter and was traveling westbound on Benson Street when he collided with a 2019 Nissan Murano, operated by a 51-year-old man, traveling northbound on Kenilworth Avenue.

The child sustained head trauma and was taken to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze in stable condition. His condition subsequently deteriorated, and he was later listed in critical condition by hospital staff, said the NYPD.

No charges have been filed in connection with the crash and the investigation remains ongoing.
