Most beachgoers across the city are not being allowed in the water Monday due to potentially hazardous weather conditions, NYC Parks said.
The department says water access is being prohibited at all city beaches, with the exception of Orchard Beach in the Bronx, although the sand will remain open. The closures are being enforced by Parks Enforcement Patrol.
Large breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet are possible as the National Weather Service predicts a dangerous rip current threat along the East Coast.
Heavy rain is also moving across the five boroughs, with a citywide Flood Watch in effect through 8 p.m. Monday.
“The safety of New Yorkers is our top priority,” NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura said in a statement. “We strongly urge all New Yorkers to heed these warnings and not risk their lives by entering the water.”
