Morning Edition continues our look at the debate around the push to hold open primaries in New York City.
Currently, New York City runs on a system of closed primaries. That means only people registered with a party can vote in that party’s primary.
Last week we spoke with Jasmine Gripper, the executive director of the Working Families Party. She strongly opposed open primaries, which she said she believed would weaken the parties, as well as civic institutions like unions and community organizations.
Anthony Thomas is the Executive Director of Unite NY, the organization behind the recent push. This week he joined WNYC’s Michael Hill to explain why his organization is in favor of it.
