ALBANY, N.Y. (WBNG/WCAX) – Representatives from No Kid Hungry New York are reminding families of summer meals and grocery assistance programs across the state.
Eligible families can receive $120 per child through the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer Program (EBT) for groceries. Applications for the program are open until Sept. 8. See more information here.
Additionally, No Kid Hungry New York hosts several summer meal sites across the state, helping families access free resources.
More than $134,000 has been awarded by No Kid Hungry New York to fund community programs, school districts and local organizations across the state.
The grants will expand meal access through grab-and-go options, home delivery programs and mobile meal sites.
“Summer should be a time for children to enjoy being out of school, not a time when families worry about putting food on the table,” said Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York. “We encourage every eligible family to go online and make sure they’re enrolled for benefits, and to take advantage of these resources before summer comes to an end. Whether it’s free summer meals in your community or Summer EBT grocery Benefits, help is available.”
Food insecurity often increases during the summer when children don’t have access to school-provided meals and families feel the strain on their budgets due to rising grocery costs.
A recent No Kid Hungry New York poll shows three-quarters of New York families had to choose between buying groceries and paying for other essentials.
