BOROUGHWIDE — THE BROOKLYN DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE is celebrating a record low for homicides, just as the city prepares for National Night Out Against Crime later on Tuesday.
Brooklyn had the fewest homicides in any month ever this July, recording just two for the past month, and tying the record from this January for the fewest killings in any calendar month, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced. Brooklyn then went 29 consecutive days without a murder — the longest such streak on record. While the borough recorded one homicide each on July 1 and 2, no additional murders took place until a woman was found dead in a suspected domestic incident on Aug. 1. That 29-day stretch bucked the trend of the highest numbers of homicides usually happening during the summer months.
Homicides in Brooklyn are also down 37% and shooting incidents are down 16%, so far during 2026, Gonzalez reported.
The Brooklyn DA’s Office is employing a comprehensive Stop Violence strategy to end gun violence, focusing on the individuals causing the most harm, long-term investigations of gang and firearm trafficking, and technology investments, community partnerships, alternative and preventative programs, and youth engagement, among other initiatives.
