New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is on board with the return of notices, dubbed “shame stickers,” which are used to call out parking violations on NYC streets.
On Tuesday, August 4, the large neon green stickers — which read: “This vehicle violated NYC’s street cleaning rules. As a result, this street could not be properly cleaned” — from the New York City Department of Sanitation were reintroduced after 14 years by NYC Council Member Gale Brewer, who was a prime sponsor of the bill, according to PIX 11.
During a press conference Tuesday, uploaded onto the politician’s YouTube channel, Mamdani, 34, was asked about the stickers, and he expressed support for the decision.
“I think that it’s critically important that the Sanitation Department be able to conduct street cleaning,” he told reporters. “Whenever I’ve seen the hardworking men and women of DSNY, the question is always ‘how can we make their jobs easier?’ If this does that, then it’s something that I support.”
The bill was passed at the end of June and allows the DOT to use stickers no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches on the cars, per PIX 11.
“Street cleaning only works when cars move,” Brewer said per the outlet. “Warning stickers were one of the City’s most effective tools for improving compliance before they were banned in 2012. Bringing them back with Local Law 119/2026, is a practical, common-sense step that will help keep our streets cleaner for everyone.”
Unfortunately, the stickers are a hassle for drivers as they are hard to remove, former City Council Member David Greenfield noted in a Tuesday X post condemning them.
“Many of drivers getting stickered were innocent and the glue wrecked their cars,” he wrote. “A ticket is a penalty. Gluing trash to someone’s windshield is vandalism.”
