New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday hailed Abdul El-Sayed’s projected to win in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat — and fired back at a GOP talking point about the risk to the country of “mini-Mamdanis.”
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, caused a political earthquake with his 2025 election victory, and El-Sayed’s triumph is another boost for the Democratic left-wing and their hopes for the direction of the party.
Speaking at a press conference, Mamdani referenced how El-Sayed defied more than $50 million worth of spending supporting his opponent, which he said bought “surround sound” messaging.
“To win this race as someone who is not currently holding elected office, it is a testament to what he ran on, and also the way he ran the campaign,” Mamdani said.
The mayor was also asked about a post by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who following El-Sayed’s win warned of the country being “overrun by mini-Mamdanis.”
Mamdani replied that El-Sayed “ran a campaign where it was best described by his words of ‘money out of politics, money in your pocket, Medicare for all.'”
“And if those simple commitments and beliefs are what drives Rep. Johnson to these kinds of conclusions, I think it shows you how deeply out-of-touch the Republican Party is with the concerns of working-class Americans,” Mamdani added.

El-Sayed topped moderate Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) and will now face former Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee.
