Vacate order issued after Astoria market ceiling collapse

City inspectors ordered an Astoria supermarket vacated after part of its ceiling collapsed Thursday, injuring four people, officials said.

A 25-by-60-foot swath of City Fresh Market’s ceiling fell to the floor inside the grocery store on Broadway around 4:30 p.m., the FDNY and the city’s Department of Buildings said.

Emergency responders transported two people with minor injuries to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, according to the FDNY.

Two other people with injuries declined medical attention at the scene, the DOB said.

Because of the unsafe conditions, the DOB said it issued a vacate order for the entire supermarket.

Inspectors also hit the building owner with a violation for failing to maintain the structure.

The DOB has ordered the owner to hire a professional engineer to evaluate the building’s structural stability and submit a report before the property can be reoccupied.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation. NY1 has reached out to the supermarket for comment.
