BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) – The Brooklyn Heights Fire Department and other emergency forces responded to a water rescue involving a child who was submerged in a waterfall near a city park.
The department said they responded with the Brooklyn Heights Police Department to Tuxedo Park at 4:34 p.m. for a young boy who was submerged near the waterfall.
Bystanders were reported to have removed the child from the water, and a nurse began resuscitation efforts, according to the fire department.
An officer arrived at the scene and provided medical care to the child until fire and EMS crews were able to take over.
The child was located several hundred feet into the park, and fire crews said emergency crews transported the child to an ambulance.
The child has since been transported to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, where the child was reported to be in stable condition.
Among the first responders who reported to the incident, two off-duty Brooklyn Heights firefighters who specialize in water and dive rescue training were called in to assist.
The fire department said the Seven Hills Fire Department and Parma Fire Department provided mutual aid.
Brooklyn Heights Fire Chief Lasky recognized the nurse who assisted in the rescue efforts.
“The nurse whose decisive actions were key to the successful resuscitation of the victim. Her willingness to immediately step in and provide care made a critical difference in the outcome of this incident,” the fire department wrote in a social media post on the incident.
The department said it wants to use this incident as a reminder of the dangers of moving water and waterfalls and what actions can be taken to protect children.
“Moving water and waterfalls can create dangerous conditions that may not be apparent from shore. Closely supervise children around water, avoid areas with strong currents or waterfalls, and wear a properly fitted life jacket when participating in activities on or around the water,” the department said.
