The NYPD is paying tribute to a former chief who drowned in a pool in the backyard of a Long Island home this weekend.
Police in Suffolk County said Anthony Izzo was found unresponsive Friday evening at a home in Stony Brook around 7:45 p.m. Officials said a family member called 911.
Izzo, who lived at the home, was pulled from the pool and rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was ultimately pronounced dead. Police said Izzo’s death did not appear criminal in nature.
The 75-year-old served the NYPD as chief of the Organized Crime Control Bureau.
“Today, we mourn the passing of retired NYPD Chief Anthony J. Izzo, who proudly served as our Commanding Officer in 1995,” the department’s 115th Precinct posted on X.
“His leadership and dedication to the people of New York City left a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
