From classical ballet to contemporary dance, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
The 44th annual Battery Dance Festival runs August 10-16 in Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park. The festival features works by 30 different companies and choreographers from around the world. The week will include in-person and live-streamed performances, as well as daily $1 workshops.
The Joyce Theater’s annual ballet festival continues at the Chelsea venue through Ausust 16. The two-week festival is curated this year by Misty Copeland, featuring performances by dancers from New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and more. The festival will include works choreographed by Bob Fosse, Rudolf Nureyev, Kyle Abraham, José Limón, Aleisha Walker, and more.
The Parker Quartet will give a concert at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music August 10. The chamber ensemble will perform works by György Kurtág, including Officium breve, Aus der Ferne III, 12 Microludes, Aus der Ferne V, and Six Moments Musicaux. The program will also include a new work by Suzanne Farrin.
Carnegie Hall+ presents a free outdoor screening of Cavallerie rusticana and Pagliacci at Hudson Yards August 13. The filmed production from the Salzburg Easter Festival stars tenor Jonas Kaufmann playing the leading roles in both halves of the classic double bill of verismo operas by Mascagni and Leoncavalo. The screening will be preceded by a musical introduction and synopsis given by Anthony Roth Costanzo, with pianist Myra Huang.
Pianist Vivien Schweitzer will give a recital of Philip Glass and Franz Schubert at BargeMusic on August 15. The program will alternate etudes by Glass with impromptus by Schubert. Pianist Inna Falkis will perform at BargeMusic on August 16, giving a concert of music by Schumnan as well as some of her own compositions.
