According to the unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State, the following four candidates received the highest amount of votes in the August primary and will advance to the general election for two at-large seats on the Brooklyn Center City Council: Gretchen Enger, Dan Jerzak, Nahid Khan and Mark Viste.
The top-most vote getters were separated by just a handful of votes. According to the results, Enger took 1,060 votes or 17.7% of the vote; Jerzak took 1,030 votes or 17.2% of the vote; Khan took 815 votes or 13.6% of the vote; and Viste took 657 or 11% of the vote.
Gretchen Enger
Enger is a member of the Brooklyn Center Finance Commission. She is employed as a UX consultant.
Dan Jerzak
Jerzak is an incumbent, having served on the Brooklyn Center City Council since January 2023. He is retired.
Nahid Khan
Khan serves as chair of the Brooklyn Center Arts and Beautification Commission and a member of the Sister Cities Commission. She describes herself as an independent researcher, scholar, writer and consultant.
Mark Viste
Viste serves as a member of the Brooklyn Center Planning Commission. He is employed as an engineer.
The five remaining candidates accounted for 40.5% of the vote: Justin McGuire took 568 votes; Ebonie L. McMillan took 564; Aniya White took 533; Jacob Carter took 491; and Georgette Byers took 265.
Members of the Brooklyn Center City Council serve four-year terms.
The four candidates who won the primary will square off in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election. The two winners will take the oath of office and begin serving in January.
