Two homes on the same street on Long Island were damaged after trees slammed into them, and while no people were hurt, there is now a rush to rescue the cats inside one of the houses.

One-by-one on Tuesday, cats trapped inside the Westbury home were pulled to safety, an answer to the prayers of their owner, Wendy Kimball.

“They’re my children, and they’re the reason I get up every day,” Kimball said.

She and her brother had to leave the cats behind Monday night after a massive red oak tree crashed into their home’s roof.

“I ran upstairs absolutely hysterical. My brother was in bed and I couldn’t see him because the whole ceiling was on the bed. I don’t know how he lived,” said Kimball.

Fortunately, neither Kimball nor her brother was hurt, but the damage inside was extensive, leaving the home unsafe for occupancy.

A tree contractor said a second home just down the street was also hit by a falling tree. A family inside that home escaped injury as well.

But for Kimball, she said what happened was “the worst thing that’s happened to me since my mother died.” A self-described caregiver for wayward cats, Kimball’s home of 72 years was filled with more than three dozen cats when the tree came crashing down.

After the tree fell, volunteer rescuers pulled eight cats from the home but had to give up their rescue effort because of safety concerns inside the home.

“Within the hour we got out, that ceiling and wall collapsed. So we were pretty lucky,” rescuer Deb Oliver said.

Oliver and another rescuer were only able to return Tuesday after an engineer concluded it was safe to go inside the home. The cats, they said, appear to be in good physical condition.

“They’re terrified, but they’re healthy, they’re clean. Some are crated, some are free roaming, but they’re well taken care of,” said Oliver.

The rescued cats will be moved to an undisclosed location to be cared for until they can return. Kimball said her only lament is that she didn’t listen to advice to trim or take down the 72-year-old tree before the disaster. 

“As long as I can get my cats back and they’re healthy…It was meant to be I think,” Kimball said.
