It is going to get cold, really cold, this weekend across much of the Eastern part of the United States, including across New York State. A massive dip in the jet stream is going to bring cold Canadian air into the state and drop our temperatures to near, if not freezing, this weekend.

There are two Polar Vortexes on Earth. They are large low-pressure air masses that rotate around the North and South poles of the Earth. They become strong in Winter and weaker in the summer. During the Winter, the Polar Vortex can drop hundreds of miles away from the North Pole and bring very cold air to much of North America. That is what is expected to happen this weekend.

The good news is that the Vortex should move back up North quickly and we will be to more normal for this time of year temperatures by Tuesday afternoon.
