Two brothers were found shot to death in the basement of a home on Long Island, leaving a family devastated and a community wondering what led to their deaths.

The two men were found with gunshot wounds in the lower level of a house on Angevine Avenue in Hempstead Wednesday afternoon, police said. It was not immediately clear what happened to the pair in the moments leading up to their deaths, with investigators only revealing both were found with gunshot wounds.

When asked if it could have been a domestic dispute, Hempstead Police Chief Richard Holland said “all possibilities are being investigated at this time.”

Family members did not wish to reveal the names of the victims, but told NBC New York the brothers were 49 and 52 years old, respectively. One of the men worked at a local church.

“He’s a nice guy, he works hard and everything. He works for the church, that’s all I can say,” said Deacon Jimmy Davis, of the Antioch Baptist Church.

A sister of the victims did not wish to be identified, but said that in addition to the sibling who worked at the church, the other brother had taken care of her parents.

“They were good people, very loving people,” the sister said through tears.

A woman said she’s known the family for many years and that the older brother was like a brother to her.

“Very good guy, very good guy. Helped everybody. Loved everybody. Just an overall good person,” the neighbor said.

Those who live in the area said they could not image why someone would want to kill the two men they see all the time.

“My first thought was, did someone break into the house? And when I didn’t hear anything about breaking and entering, I said it had to be something happened inside,” said neighbor Bobby Jackson.

The victims’ sister said police were investigating.

“They have to do an autopsy and we have to wait for the results to see what actually happened to them,” said the sister.

Police did not share who called 911 or whether a weapon was recovered. Nassau County police said later in the evening that there was no threat posed to the public.

An investigation is ongoing.
