Calpulli Mexican Dance Company returns to Queens Theatre in Flushing from Oct. 17-20 with its full-length production, “Día de Muertos.” 

Inspired by one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions, the performance utilizes Mexican folkloric dance, contemporary movement and live music to tell a timeless story of family and remembrance.

Public performances at the theater, located at 14 United Nations Ave. S. in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, will run on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.

There will also be four school-time performances that will include excerpts from the full production with dancers, musicians and interactive narration, offering educational opportunities for New York City students to learn about Día de Muertos.

Those performances will take place Monday, Oct. 19, at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

The production incorporates original choreography, traditional costumes and the iconic figure of La Catrina to explore the unending ties between the living and the departed. Rooted in traditional Mexican heritage, the family-friendly program invites audiences of all generations to experience the symbolism of the tradition through performance.

Before each performance, audiences are also invited to explore immersive art installations throughout Queens Theatre inspired by Día de Muertos, the streets of Oaxaca and the waterways of Xochimilco in Mexico City. The installations will allow visitors to experience the sights and spirit of the celebration before the curtain rises.

Calpulli, founded in 2003, has been recognized nationally for its artistic excellence and was praised by New York Times writer Brian Seibert, who said, “The dance numbers keep coming, feet stamping, skirts swirling, as narrative turns are woven in with easy-to-follow clarity.”

Known internationally for celebrating Mexican and Mexican-American heritage through dance and live music, Calpulli’s production transforms the tradition of Día de Muertos into an uplifting theatrical event. The immersive experience includes altar, community offerings and pre-show programming, leading audiences into the main performance that weaves folkloric and contemporary storytelling together. 

The original story was written by former Artistic Director Alberto Lopez Herrera, Roberto Lara, Grisel Pren Monje, Gabriela Garcia and Juan Castaño.

The dance company’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. Supporting members include State Sen. Jessica Ramos and State Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas.

Public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, also supports the production. Supporting members include council members Shekar Krishnan, Pierina Sanchez and Tiffany Caban.
