Dr. John Evanko, the new head of Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island, says a merger with a larger system is likely within the next few years. The West Brighton hospital has operated largely independently since 2007, and Evanko says that makes it harder to compete with larger healthcare systems like Northwell Health and Health + Hospitals. Richmond University Medical Center has maintained an affiliation with Mount Sinai Health System since 2020, and Evanko says discussions about a possible merger are still ongoing. He also said the hospital’s finances are stable for now, and there has been no final decision on a merger.
