Big changes are coming to the New York City Marathon.
For years, runners have been using the 9+1 Program, which allows runners to participate in nine qualifying races and volunteer at one race in order to earn a guaranteed spot in the marathon.
However, starting with the 2028 marathon, the New York Road Runners will hold a lottery drawing for its members to participate in the 9+1 Program instead.
New York Road Runners CEO Rob Simmelkjaer joined Shannan Ferry on “News All Day” to discuss the rule change and what it means for participants and the future of the New York City Marathon.
